The Canal and River Trust's office refurbishment in London

We are very excited to announce that we have been awarded an office refurbishment contract for The Canal and River Trust; giving a new lease of life to their Adelaide Office & Workshop in Southall, West London.

Designed to help their staff feel equipped and comfortable at work, the refurbishment of the office will breathe new life into the space, setting it up to take advantage of the benefits of modern technology. Another benefit is that the company will easily be able to change the configuration ofthe space; catering for any changes in the number of staff members or any particular requirements they may have.

Launched in 2012, the Canal & River Trust are the guardians of over 2,000 miles of waterways, including canals, rivers, docks and a wide range of heritage buildings and structures in England & Wales. A registered charity, the Canal and River Trust took over from the state-owned British Waterways after budget cuts and the financial crisis of 2007-08 brought into question the long-term future of our waterways. The Trust currently employs 1,500 staff, with 2000 volunteers assisting in keeping these historical sites functioning, making life better for millions of people across the country.

A great example of the type of projects they undertake (and one being very close to their Southall location), was the creation of a 'health walk' trail. Working with Ealing Council and Catalyst Housing Association (with additional funding from Tesco's 'Bags of Help' scheme), the project has been designed to give local people an easy and healthy way to take up walking. Prescribed by local GP practices, the health walk comprises of a 1km stretch of the Grand Union Canal – new signage leading from the Havelock Estate will highlight the route, leading up to Norwood Top Lock on the Hanwell Flight. This particular portion of the canal was built in 1794, so the importance of having a body, such as the Canal and River Trust, to maintain these areas cannot be underestimated.

How we got this workplace refurbishment contract.

The Canal & River Trust approached us here at Oaktree Interiors to tender for the project, having already completed several projects for them at a number of their other UK office locations. After a tough selection process involving a number of other office design companies, we were delighted when we were awarded the office refurbishment contract.

A significant part of why we were chosen, was the versatility we are able to show from our previous work. As an example, just over three years ago, we assisted their Milton Keynes offices by re-organising their desk system, creating additional space for 18 people in various departments. This was achieved by utilising their existing bench systems, whilst also incorporating new modules to create the extra positions.

What we're doing with the office design and build.

The project work will entail office refurbishment work on two floors of the building, with the shell and core being completely stripped back. Demolition work will also be performed with the knocking down of walls and the chimney breast. This will then give us the means to install a brand-new electrical system throughout the building, facilitating the fitting of central heating and lighting. We will also be installing new WC's, a kitchen and breakout facility, along with new internal & external doors.

We are currently on site, delivering this project and we expect to have it completed in the coming weeks.
