In October The British Council for Offices (BCO) named what it believes is the best and most innovative offices in the UK. The list includes a wide variety of office interiors in London and around the country, each with its own unique features.
Number One Riverside, Rochdale – This was named top of the awards list after it was named the “Best of the Best" by the judges. They said that it “promotes new ways of working and creates a sense of community, engagement and social transparency". The building is owned by Rochdale council and is used primarily as a library, but also includes a café, meeting rooms and other spaces.
One Eagle Place, London – This was voted as the best commercial workplace by the BCO judges, and hosts the offices for Virgin Money and Hayfin Capital Management. BCO said: “Externally the design is both brave and testing, while elegantly retaining the original facades. Internally the building delivers highly efficient but simple floor plates that maximise the aspects along Piccadilly."
The Council House, Derby – This won the top award in the refurbished and recycled category. The facade of the locally listed 1930s building was retained and the roofline maintained, but the amount of space on site was increased by over 50% so it could accommodate almost four times as many staff without changing the appearance of the building.
Walbrook Building, London – This was awarded for the best fit out of a workplace, making it one of the most cost-effective office interiors in London. The building is owned by insurance company Arthur J. Gallagher, accommodates over 700 staff and includes electric glass walls and break out spaces which can be moved to suit their requirements.
4 Stable Street, London – This was voted as the best small space to work in, and was judged against other offices which are up to 2,000m2. “The individual spaces, whether it be the marketing suite, the open plan areas, the cosy living room or the staff kitchen – which incorporates the essential large kitchen table – are tied together beautifully," BCO said.
The Sharp Project, Manchester – This won the innovation award from the BCO judges. The building is owned by the city council and houses 54 film, TV, music and design companies.
Kings Place, London – This office interior is home to The Guardian News & Media main offices, winning the 'test of time' category. The workplace won the best of the best category back in 2009, this year it was given its award because it continues to “live up to their original aspirations and intentions".
